City of Miramichi

Map

Description

The Miramichi River at the City of Miramichi provides lots of shoreline and history to explore. From Beaubears Island Historic Site, where the northwest and southwest branches of the river meet, to Middle Island Historic site where the river starts to widen out into Miramichi Bay. The river is less than a kilometre wide and tidal, so plan your adventures accordingly. This section of river is where I learned to paddle as a teenager and we quickly learned that we could get a lot farther when paddling with the tides.

The city used to be split into two towns on either side of the river called Newcastle and Chatham before they amalgamated. The waterfront in Newcastle (west side of the river) has Ritchie's Wharf to explore, which is made of of several shops and restaurants. In Chatham (east side of the river) you can stop and have a fancy meal at the Rodd Inn, or explore the park at Waterford Green next door. In between you will always see the impressive arches of the Centennial Bridge that crosses the river near Chatham.

If you forgot your boat, or are just looking for a smaller water body experience, check out French Fort Cove Park. This high sided cove has become a hub for outdoor adventure in the Miramichi. You can rent canoes, hike the park, or mountain bikes deep into the woods along the cove. You may even see someone fly overhead while you are paddling. A zipline crosses over the cove in several places.
